Today was the third day in our son, Jonah’s, recovery after having surgery for exotropia. We went through a course of patching his eye only to get to a point where it needed to be addressed in a more strategic way. And, so, on Wednesday of this past week we brought him in. He did AWESOME!
Jonah is such a champ when it comes to taking medicine so when he had to take “silly juice” to help him relax before they took him back to surgery he handled it with no problem. Frankly, that was a HUGE concern for Steph and me. We know our son so we had fears that he would have a melt down. Yet, he got “silly” just as expected and went on back without complaint. He even got to pick out which scented gas mask he wanted to use. How accommodating is that? LOL!
His biggest struggle was coming out of anesthesia. He woke up saying he couldn’t see and when he rubbed his eyes it hurt him which increased his disorientation and discomfort. Fortunately, my wife and I were there early. I held him for a bit and he fell back to sleep. When we got home we all took about a two hour nap (which helped us all). By the time I picked up Jonah’s sister at grandma’s he was back to his usual energetic self.
His recovery has been terrific. We feel so blessed to have access to such a great doctor. His eyes are definitely blood-red on the outside, but the swelling has been minimal. He reported today (after his exam with the doctor, of course) that he has bouts of double-vision. The doctor did tell us after the surgery and even today at the check-up that this is par for the course for his recovery and that his eyes will stabilize. The body is amazing isn’t it?
On a different yet relevant note, my son and daughter’s birthdays are this month and next month respectively and we scheduled delivery of one of those big gym sets. We selected Creative Playthings because they offer excellent quality AND they also offer free delivery and set up. Of course, I know that the delivery and set up are really included in the price somewhere, but it is something I’m more than willing to pay for since I’m mechanically illiterate. The other sets we investigated had poor-to-average reviews. We’re happy with our selection. We’ll let you know if that changes tomorrow after they get it all set up and we’re using it.
It’s already 5:40 and the delivery/set-up guys just showed up. We thought they said they’d be here by three and be done by 6:00 but I guess we misheard them. Unfortunately, they also just informed me that three hours is a good amount of time for them. YIKES! Needless to say, I’m hopeful that the kids can still get to sleep at their normal 7:00-7:30 bedtime.
We’re holding off on telling them since they won’t be able to play with it until tomorrow anyway. I’ll post some photos. We’re excited for them.
